All About Photo - "Street Photography" Photo Contest

Encyclopedia Britannica defines street photography as "a genre that records everyday life in a public place." This seemingly simple definition only scratches the surface of a rich and dynamic field of photography that has been practiced since the earliest days of the medium. From the moment photography was invented, artists have used the camera to capture the essence of life unfolding in public spaces. One of the earliest examples of this genre is Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre's image "View of the Boulevard du Temple," taken in 1838. This photograph immortalizes a Parisian street scene, offering a glimpse into the rhythm of daily life at the time.

As photographic technology advanced, both in terms of camera portability and image quality, more photographers ventured out into the streets to document the vibrant energy of urban life. Notable figures such as Charles Nègre, Eugene Atget, Alfred Stieglitz, Andre Kertész, Berenice Abbott, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Brassaï, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Vivian Maier, Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, and William Eggleston all contributed to the growth and popularity of street photography. Their works capture the ever-changing landscape of cities, the fleeting moments of human interaction, and the unique characters who inhabit the streets. These iconic photographers helped establish street photography as an essential means of exploring the relationship between people and their environments, while also chronicling the social, cultural, and architectural transformations that have shaped urban life over the decades.

Today, street photography continues to thrive as both a popular form of artistic expression and a powerful tool for visual storytelling. It remains one of the most engaging ways to communicate the heart and soul of a society, offering a raw and unfiltered look at the world around us. The genre celebrates the ordinary and the extraordinary, capturing moments that often go unnoticed but reveal deep insights into the human condition. Whether documenting the fast-paced energy of bustling cities or the quiet solitude of overlooked spaces, street photographers have a unique ability to transform the mundane into the memorable.

Now, we invite you to contribute to this rich tradition by submitting your own body of work or portfolio that captures the weird and wonderful moments happening around you. The subject matter is entirely up to you, and we encourage creativity in your choice of method and process—whether you work with digital or analog formats, employ monochromatic toning, or experiment with new techniques. What matters most is your ability to reveal something unexpected or thought-provoking in the everyday.

Winners of this competition will not only receive $1,000 in cash awards, but their winning image(s) or full portfolio will also be published in AAP Magazine #44, gaining them extensive press coverage and global recognition. All winners will have their work featured in the 44th printed issue of AAP Magazine, receive a free copy of the magazine, and have their portfolio showcased in the Winners Gallery on www.all-about-photo.com.

So, why enter the All About Photo Competitions? This is an incredible opportunity to gain visibility for your work, connect with a global audience, and be part of a long-standing tradition of capturing the essence of life as it unfolds in public spaces.
