All About Photo - #61: Street Call for Entries

The streets are constantly changing. People pass one another without knowing that their movements, expressions and gestures may become part of a story lasting only a few seconds. Light shifts across buildings, crowds appear and disappear, and unexpected moments emerge without warning. Street photography is about being present for those moments and seeing the world when it is simply being itself.

A stranger’s glance, an unusual coincidence, the rush and movement of the city or the quiet atmosphere of a deserted street can all become powerful photographs. This call invites photographers to explore everyday life through their own perspective and share the moments that capture their attention, imagination or sense of curiosity.

Street photography has a long and influential history. Commonly understood as photography that documents everyday life in public places, the genre has evolved alongside the camera itself. Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre’s 1838 image of the Boulevard du Temple is often recognised as one of the earliest examples of a photograph capturing life on the street. As cameras became smaller, lighter and faster, photographers gained new freedom to document the spontaneous and unpredictable nature of towns and cities.

From Eugène Atget and Henri Cartier-Bresson to Vivian Maier, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand and William Eggleston, generations of photographers have transformed everyday urban life into some of photography’s most memorable images. Their work continues to demonstrate that the street is never simply a backdrop—it is a living, changing environment filled with stories waiting to be noticed. This is an invitation for photographers to step outside and show the world how they see it.
