Monochrome photography possesses a unique and enduring charm, often described as timeless and poetic. By eliminating the distraction of color, black and white imagery allows photographers to focus on the essential visual elements that define a photograph—contrast, lighting, texture, shape, and composition. This refined perspective enhances emotional depth, often evoking feelings of nostalgia and introspection. As a result, black and white photography continues to hold a powerful place in both historical and contemporary photographic practices.
This competition invites photographers to explore the full breadth of monochrome expression. Submissions may span a variety of genres, including but not limited to documentary and photojournalistic work, candid street photography, expressive portraiture, artistic nude photography, sweeping landscapes, wildlife imagery, urban environments, architectural studies, fashion editorials, and conceptual fine art. The contest embraces diversity in subject matter while maintaining a shared focus on black and white aesthetics.
Applicants are required to submit a portfolio that demonstrates cohesion and intentionality. Each entry must include at least three photographs that belong together as part of a consistent series or project. The images should be linked through a common idea, visual approach, or thematic concept, forming a unified body of work. Submissions are evaluated as complete series rather than individual photographs. It is important to note that images previously featured in AAP Magazine are not eligible for this competition.
Winners of the contest will receive a share of $1,000 in cash prizes, along with the opportunity to have their work published in AAP Magazine Vol. 58. Beyond publication, winners will gain international visibility through press exposure and recognition within the worldwide photography network, helping to elevate their artistic profile.
