Black and white photography has long been celebrated for its ability to transcend time, capturing scenes with a poetic stillness that feels both nostalgic and deeply expressive. Stripped of color, the viewer’s attention is drawn more intensely to the interplay of light and shadow, the strength of composition, and the richness of textures and forms. This minimalist yet powerful approach reveals the underlying structure and emotion of a subject, allowing its essence to emerge with clarity. For decades, monochrome imagery has remained a cornerstone of photographic practice, continuously influencing artists from diverse disciplines and inspiring new generations to explore its visual language.
This photography contest dedicated to black and white imagery welcomes a wide spectrum of creative interpretations. Participants are encouraged to experiment across genres, whether their work falls within photojournalism, street photography, documentary storytelling, portraiture, nude studies, landscapes, wildlife, urban scenes, architectural explorations, fashion imagery, or fine art photography. The aim is to celebrate the versatility and expressive potential of monochrome across all photographic styles.
Photographers applying to the competition are invited to present a carefully curated and cohesive body of work. Submissions must consist of a minimum of three images that are clearly connected, forming a unified series or project. This connection may be based on subject matter, visual style, conceptual theme, or narrative intent. The emphasis is placed on storytelling through a series rather than individual standalone images. Please note that any photographs previously published in AAP Magazine are not eligible for entry.
Selected winners will be awarded cash prizes totaling $1,000. In addition, their winning photographs or full portfolios will be featured in AAP Magazine Vol. 58, offering valuable international exposure. Winners will also benefit from press coverage and recognition within the global photography community, providing an excellent opportunity to showcase their work to a broader audience.
