Those wondering whether they have made it into the Top 101 have two straightforward ways to check. They can explore the flipbook featuring all Top 101 entries, available at the bottom of the article, where the selected works are presented in full. Alternatively, they can access the Archive section through the menu above and choose the current year to review the complete list of featured photographers.
The perspective from above has long fascinated both artists and viewers. Observing a subject from an elevated vantage point introduces a sense of novelty and visual intrigue, often resulting in images that feel unfamiliar or even slightly abstract. Since most people experience the world from eye level—approximately 1.5 metres above the ground—an aerial viewpoint disrupts everyday perception. Shapes flatten into patterns, shadows become compositional tools, and landscapes transform into intricate designs.
Today’s photographers are pushing this perspective further than ever before. Many utilise advanced drones equipped with high-resolution sensors, enabling precise framing and extraordinary detail. Others rely on aircraft such as planes, helicopters, or even hot air balloons to reach higher altitudes and capture sweeping, dramatic scenes.
After ten years of overseeing the highly regarded International Landscape Photographer of the Year awards, organisers Peter Eastway and David Evans began noticing a steady increase in outstanding aerial submissions. The growing quality and quantity of these images prompted a new idea: a competition dedicated exclusively to aerial photography. The response to that idea was immediate and enthusiastic—clearly, the time was right.
