Doug Chinnery is an artist whose creative philosophy challenges the traditional confines of photography. He remarks, “I long ago stopped thinking of myself as a photographer and more as an abstract artist, using the camera as my principal medium.” His artistic exploration resides in the liminal space where photography meets mixed media abstract expressionism. Drawing influence from celebrated painters like Howard Hodgkin, Paul Feiler, Fiona Rae, and Robert Ryman, Chinnery’s works aim to evoke an emotional response, crafting what he calls “visual poetry.” While he strives for deeply evocative imagery, he acknowledges the difficulty of his process: “I fail more often than I succeed,” he shares.
Chinnery’s work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, and his book, Abstract Mindedness, has enjoyed such popularity that it is now sold out. Beyond his personal achievements, Chinnery is also an educator and mentor. Alongside Valda Bailey, he co-founded the online photography education platform "Finding Your Voice." This program helps photographers refine their artistic expression and develop unique styles through comprehensive tutorials, insightful critiques, and a thriving community network.
