Some places are meant to be contemplated. Others are meant to be experienced, felt, and remembered. And then there are those rare moments when a landscape, a gesture, a fleeting encounter, or a beam of light comes together perfectly — and a camera has the power to preserve it forever.
The María Luisa Memorial returns for its 37th edition, continuing a journey that has always been about much more than photography. It is a search for those extraordinary images capable of stopping time for a few seconds, surprising us, moving us, and reminding us of the incredible world that surrounds us — a world that deserves not only to be discovered and admired, but also understood, respected, and protected.
Once again, mountains, oceans, forests, deserts, landscapes, fauna, flora, biodiversity, mountaineering, climbing, adventure, and the rural world will meet on this great international stage of images and emotions. Every photograph becomes an invitation to travel, to explore places both familiar and unknown, and to see nature through the eyes of those who dedicate themselves to capturing its most powerful moments.
The moving image will also have its place. Films, videos, and documentaries will offer new ways of approaching nature, allowing us to experience landscapes, wildlife, adventures, and stories from perspectives that photography alone cannot always convey. And this year, a new dimension will open before us: the Universe. As the special theme of this edition, it invites photographers and filmmakers to look beyond our planet and capture the immense beauty, mystery, and fascination of the unknown.
Yet the María Luisa Memorial has never been simply about extraordinary destinations. At its heart, it is about vision.
It is about the people who notice what others pass by. Those who stop when everyone else continues walking. Those who wait patiently for the right light, the right movement, the right instant. Those who can transform a personal experience into a photograph, and a photograph into a story capable of reaching people anywhere in the world.
This 37th edition also marks an important new step with the introduction, for the first time, of a special section dedicated to photographers with disabilities. Because creativity has no limits, talent can emerge from every experience, and every person has their own unique way of seeing the world. This new section is an invitation to step behind the camera, share a different perspective, and show us stories, emotions, and interpretations that deserve to be seen and celebrated.
For 37 editions, photographers and filmmakers from more than a hundred countries have come together through the María Luisa Memorial. Established names, emerging talents, passionate adventurers, and creators from every corner of the world have all found a place here — united by the same desire: to communicate something meaningful through an image.
Because sometimes a photograph does more than show us a place.
Sometimes, it makes us feel that we were there.
