12th Jalón Ángel Photography Prize

Preserved and curated by San Jorge University, part of the San Valero Group, the Jalón Ángel Photographic Archive announces the 12th Jalón Ángel International Photography Prize, reaffirming its dedication to photography as both an art form and a means of understanding the human experience.

Ángel Hilario García de Jalón Hueto (1898–1976), known professionally as Jalón Ángel, was a leading figure in Spanish photography whose influence spanned more than fifty years. Renowned above all for his portrait work, Jalón Ángel approached photography with a deep sensitivity to human presence and social context. His artistic journey began in Logroño and continued abroad in the early twentieth century, where he expanded his vision through training in Lyon and later in Paris—two cities that played a crucial role in shaping his aesthetic language.

In 1926, he established himself in Zaragoza, where he developed a distinctive photographic practice that balanced studio portraiture with more personal and exploratory work. Travel photography, urban environments, and natural landscapes became essential parts of his creative output, allowing him to document both people and places with the same attentive eye and emotional depth.

Jalón Ángel’s commitment extended beyond photography into education and social responsibility. In 1953, motivated by a strong concern for social inclusion, he founded the San Valero Professional School, laying the foundation for what is now the San Valero Group. The institution was created to offer professional training and access to employment for young people and adults who lacked sufficient resources, reflecting his belief in education as a transformative force.

The International Photography Prize that bears his name honours this multifaceted legacy through two permanent categories: Portrait and Travel, both central to his artistic life. This year’s edition expands its scope with a special category dedicated to Migration and Borders, acknowledging the relevance of photography in addressing contemporary social and human challenges.
