The Jalón Ángel Photographic Archive, managed by San Jorge University within the San Valero Group, announces the launch of the 12th Jalón Ángel International Photography Prize. This annual award continues to honour photography as a medium capable of combining artistic excellence with social and cultural reflection.
Ángel Hilario García de Jalón Hueto (1898–1976), internationally known as Jalón Ángel, was one of Spain’s most distinguished portrait photographers. Across a professional career spanning five decades, he created a remarkable body of work characterised by technical mastery, emotional nuance, and a profound interest in people and their stories. His photographic education began in Logroño and was further developed during formative years in Lyon and Paris, where he was exposed to influential artistic movements of the early twentieth century.
After settling in Zaragoza in 1926, Jalón Ángel established a prolific studio practice while simultaneously pursuing more personal photographic projects. His work encompassed travel photography, urban scenes, and natural landscapes, demonstrating a versatile and inquisitive approach that extended well beyond the studio. His portraits, however, remain his most celebrated contribution, earning widespread recognition across Spain.
Beyond his artistic achievements, Jalón Ángel was deeply committed to social education. In 1953, he founded the San Valero Professional School, the origin of today’s San Valero Group, with the aim of supporting professional training and employment opportunities for individuals with limited access to education.
The Jalón Ángel International Photography Prize pays tribute to his enduring influence through two core categories: Portrait and Travel. Reflecting both his artistic legacy and present-day global concerns, this year’s edition also introduces a special category focused on Migration and Borders, reinforcing the award’s ongoing engagement with social realities through photography.
