12th Jalón Ángel Photography Prize

The Jalón Ángel Photographic Archive, under the stewardship of San Jorge University, part of the San Valero Group, proudly announces the organisation of the 12th edition of the Jalón Ángel International Photography Prize. This prestigious award continues its commitment to celebrating photography as a powerful medium for artistic expression, social reflection, and cultural memory.

Ángel Hilario García de Jalón Hueto (1898–1976), widely known as Jalón Ángel, was one of the most influential figures in Spanish portrait photography throughout the twentieth century. Over the course of a professional career spanning more than five decades, he developed a body of work distinguished by its technical excellence, emotional depth, and strong human presence. His early photographic training began in Logroño and was later refined during the first decade of the twentieth century through formative periods in Lyon and Paris, where he absorbed key artistic and cultural influences of the time.

In 1926, Jalón Ángel settled permanently in Zaragoza, a city that would become central to both his professional and personal life. There, he combined his most personal and creative photographic work—focusing on travel imagery, urban scenes, and natural landscapes—with a prolific studio practice dedicated primarily to portraiture. His portraits, in particular, earned him national recognition for their sensitivity and expressive power.

Deeply committed to social progress, Jalón Ángel promoted the creation of the San Valero Professional School in 1953, an initiative that would later evolve into the present-day San Valero Group. Its mission was, and remains, to facilitate access to employment by providing education and professional training to young people and adults with limited resources.

The Jalón Ángel International Photography Prize honours his enduring legacy through two annual categories: Portrait, the genre in which he achieved national prominence, and Travel, reflecting his lasting fascination with exploration and place. In recognition of contemporary global realities, this year’s edition also introduces a special category dedicated to Migration and Borders, further reinforcing the award’s commitment to social awareness and human values.
