About:

The Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition is open to artists who are at least 18 years old and who are living and working in the United States. The competition welcomes portraits made in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, printmaking, textiles, performance, and time-based media. Each artist may enter one work. The first-prize winner will receive $25,000 and a commission to portray a remarkable living American for the National Portrait Gallery’s collection. The second-prize winner will receive $10,000, and the third-prize winner will receive $7,500. The winner of the People’s Choice Award receives $1,000. All finalists’ works will be included in a major exhibition that will be on view at Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, followed by a national tour.
