About:

“FOTOFILMIC OPEN” invites photographic artists from all horizons and nationalities to exhibit their latest projects – including digital based ones, a first at FotoFilmic! – at the FotoFilmic Space on Bowen Island in metro Vancouver BC this coming Spring for a 6-week duration (April 12 – May 25, 2025).

Submissions will be reviewed by an outstanding jury panel of three photography professionals internationally recognized for their curatorial, editorial, and publishing expertises. For this first OPEN edition, we are immensely pleased to collaborate once again with LACMA Curator Rebecca Morse, The New York Times Opinion Section Photography Director Jacqueline Bates, and London-based publishers Gregory and Rachel Barker, founders at Stanley/Barker! Each juror (Rachel and Gregory together) will pick two final exhibitors from the FOTOFILMIC OPEN Call submissions for a total of six exhibitors.

The resulting FOTOFILMIC OPEN Exhibition will be entirely produced by FotoFilmic at no cost to the exhibitors (for more detailed information on this, see the exhibition section below), and be accompanied by a small newsprint publication/catalogue to be shared with the community. As an added benefit, each exhibitor will also be offered a complimentary 40-minute private online consultation with the juror that selected them to forge meaningful connections and help pave the way for other future collaborations and opportunities.

FotoFilmic started in 2012 as a global juried exhibition call focused on analog culture at a time many feared the film medium, and its tangible roots were all at stake. After six successful years and annual traveling editions (2012-18), the MESH Exhibition (2019-21) represented the last iteration of FotoFilmic’s all-analog legacy which lives on since under the form of the JRNL publication (and its own exhibition!). Keeping in line with FotoFilmic’s rich and varied educational programming today, we are excited to finally open wide the doors of contemporary photography representation through this new inclusive exhibition format!
