The German Photographic Society (DGPh) and the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation jointly present a research award that celebrates academic contributions to the theory and history of photography.
The DGPh Research Award "Thinking Photography" recognizes outstanding research projects in photographic theory, history, and related fields within the humanities, cultural studies, or social sciences that offer significant contributions to the study of photography. Eligible works include qualification theses (master’s theses, diploma theses, or dissertations) and other independent publications that expand research perspectives on photography. There are no thematic or methodological restrictions, with special consideration given to works that push the boundaries of traditional disciplines and methods.
We welcome submissions of both published and unpublished texts from the past two years. The award, endowed with 3,000 euros, will be decided by an international jury and presented at a public event organized by the German Photographic Society and the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation in 2025.
The German Photographic Society (DGPh), a registered association with approximately 1,100 members across Germany, is based in Cologne. DGPh is dedicated to promoting and exploring the cultural significance of photography and related imaging media. The society focuses on the diverse applications of photography in art, science, education, publishing, and other sectors, emphasizing their intersections and interactions. As a central authority in communicating groundbreaking achievements in photography to the public, DGPh also awards various prizes and scholarships.
